ParticipantGood observation. I bet those 18 points of strength make a noteworthy difference with a sword, though. :)

So you can fight a random battle around Xu Zhou, Gullwing somewhere and whichever cave you are in there will be Xu Zhou-area random battles? I never thought of doing it at the Wei cave but yeah that would save a ton of TP or Smoke Pots. I’ve used that trick when going into Dong Zhuo’s area (to make that first cave easier with Xu Zhou-area enemies) and also in that Saltpeter cave (since Wu characters have so many soldiers at this point). Useful tricks but not nearly as useful as going through the entire Wei cave without fighting Wei officers, although I usually have about 6 characters full of Smoke Pots at this point anyway.
Yep, the trick applies anywhere. Same with the cave in Wu, though it isn?t nearly as helpful there as it is in Wei. It can be nice in that cave before you face Yuan Shu, however.
I started finding tricks like this shortly after I noticed that the lower your level when you recruit Zhuge Liang, the higher your maximum TP for the game. If I recall correctly, your TP at the end can be as high as just under 150, or as low as around 89. That makes a huge difference toward the end of the game when fighting Xun Yu (what do they call him, Xun Huo?) or when you face Sima Yi. At that point, I decided I would not fight a single battle I didn?t need to fight until Zhuge Liang joined my party (also the reason why I always kill poor Yuan Shu). After time, I wondered how low a level I could be when I beat the game, and I also discovered that, without leveling up, pretty much the only way to beat the final caves and defeat Sima Yi, was to use the cave trick on your way through.

ParticipantDidn?t notice you were talking about the Chinese version, Samuel! What sort of thunder tactics appear in the game? Is it a variation of the fire/water tactics in the English version? I think the only mention of thunder in the English version is when Sima Yi sends you home after he takes Cao Pi?s head.
Do you play with the cartridge, or a ROM? If a ROM, it would be fun to see if it is different from the Japanese version. :)
I wonder if they intentionally opened up Jingzhou in the English version, or if it was a bug side-effect of their translation/rewrite process? very interesting stuff though!

ParticipantI just added it to Kongming?s Archives? downloads page. Go ahead and snatch it up!
You should be able to play it with any emulator that supports DoaE 1 EN. :)
(The fonts are stored in the ROM itself, so no issue there.)

Wei Yan?s role in Shu, and his death, were heavily altered for the novel. :)
Unfortunately, because of this and other tales surrounding the likes of people such as Zhuge Liang, there is still confusion as to the real history of Wei Yan. Many conclude that he and Zhuge Liang were enemies, while the opposite may indeed be the case. One thing is certain?Zhuge Liang didn?t plot his death before losing his own life. The topic goes into far too much detail for me to even begin going over here, though?

ParticipantHmm? Yeah, Sun Jian gave the seal to Yuan Shu. He did this specifically to strike out on his own, knowing it was the only way Yuan Shu would trust him with a command of his troops in the south. Yuan Shu, entranced by the thought of having the Imperial Seal, agreed, Sun Jian took his troops south saying he would conquer the territories there for Yuan Shu, then broke off and forged the groundwork of what would become Wu.

ParticipantMay not be what happened, but a few things can cause this:
1) Changing the time of the board.
2) Googlebot on a rampage.
3) Spam bots searching the board for vulnerabilities.

ParticipantZhang He. It would kick ass to be able to hire him before going into Jingzhou.

Yes, that’s quite true. You need a lot of food in order to reach a city or gate. If you raise your level to maximum (55), you food supply can run out. I imply that Shu has a secret place for you to train levels. I will post it in a new topic.
Hmm? But the game?s experience, even when maxed out, only lets you reach level 50 or 51 (depending on what you did at Ji Zhou). How can you reach a higher level? Does the level cap work differently in the CJK version of the game?

ParticipantI voted for Hui Ji. Zhou Yu and company can be a huge challenge, especially when I usually arrive at that point with just around 3,000 soldiers. I can run through the rest of the game without fighting, but if you slip up once there, Zhou Yu and his buddies can tear you apart with their water tactics?and they are good at making you slip up.
You should have listed the Yan Liang and Wen Hun [Chou] battle!
Or certainly the last battle fi you don?t use the trick to save you victory against Sima Shi and Sima Zhou.

ParticipantMy least favorite bug: The randomly vanishing treasures. On many game runs (at first I thought it was my old cartridge, but then I learned it was a flaw of the game itself) I discovered that certain items vanish early (this includes a club hidden in a house, and the sword under the Pang Tong lookalike). This early indication spells death in the future, as you will not be able to get one of the 240 attack power magic swords, but worst of all, you will not get the Halberd.
Another strange one: Just as some treasures can vanish, others can re-populate. Taking advantage of this bug can give you extra treasures! You can also use it to get an extra Iron Ore?which, once picked up, you can never remove from your inventory.
A cool one: If you go into a cave, the region?s enemies are locked into the game memory until your next outdoors encounter. You can use this to your advantage. Enter a cave in Dong Zhuo?s area, exit, Gullwing to Wei, and Smoke Pot to the two nasty caves at the end of the game. Once you enter, you can safely fight?and sure enough, you will only encounter enemies from Dong Zhuo?s area of the game.
I love how Pang De shows up in Wei with his Ba-Shu hitpoints.
I suspect they didn?t power him up because they didn?t want him to be powerful enough to use.
There are more?
