Destiny of an Emperor Walkthrough

Destiny of an Emperor is a Role Playing Game for the NES made in 1989 / 1990. It is loosely based on Luo Guanzhong's Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel. You control Liu Bei as he builds his Shu army to create peace in China.

DoaE is truly an RPG ahead of it's time. You can acquire around 100 characters on your journey to the throne. In turn the replay value is high as the possibilities are endless. You can have 7 members in your party, with 5 in the active battle.

Battle is the best part. The All-Out function allows you to save lots of time, making building up levels fresh and not grueling. Each character has a set Strength and Intelligence stat (along with a set Agility but the number for that isn't shown) and this factors into whether a tactic is successful and decides order of attack.

There are only a few characters that gain soldiers at each level. Because of this, you will have to either hire new generals as you get into new areas, or you will have to comprise your party of these "tigers" that gain soldiers at each level. They are Zhang Fei, Zhang Bao, Guan Yu, Guan Xing, Ma Chao, Zhao Yun, Jiang Wei, Huang Zhong and Zhu Ge Liang.

It's easy to see how DoaE is split up. You will begin in Zhang Jao's area, then Dong Zhuo, Yuan Shu, Yuan Shao / Jing Zhou, Shu / Liu Zheng, Sun Quan, Cao Pi and Si Ma Yi.

For those who have read Romance of the Three Kingdoms, it is easy to notice the game veers from the story. It is pretty linear as Liu Bei traverses every area of China, defeating hostile Warlords. By the time you reach Sima Yi in Wei you will be well versed in the tactical ability that DoaE teaches you.
